Developing Independent Learners

Students with special needs typically require a lot of parent attention and extra instructional time, and this can wear out the parent/teacher! This sometimes also causes the child to become overly dependent. Students need to transition from one-on-one teaching with external rewards to self-directed internal motivation. Discover specific strategy-based tools to build motivation, and be equipped with a toolkit of study skills applicable to a variety of academic subjects. Judi teaches parents to create rubrics (scoring tools that describe the finished product in advance of working on the assignment). Finally, learn more about benefits of assistive technology (text-to-speech and speech-to-text software, programs to create graphic organizers), internet- and software-based supports and other specialized word-processing software. Judi demonstrates how to transform students into more independent learners. (For parents of students from mid-level elementary through high-school level.)
