Positive Relationships in Mathematics

Studies show that a healthy student-instructor relationship has a positive influence on students’ success in mathematics. When the instructor is viewed by the student as caring, students are willing and motivated to put forth effort to find success. With research framed by the ethics of care from Joan Tronto, Brittany Hopper will share research about what four struggling students said makes a difference in their learning and how they know they are cared about. These things can be applied in any learning environment. The relationship between parent and child is applicable to the theory of care just as much or more so than that between teacher and student and has at least the same influence on a student’s success in mathematics.
