Charlotte Mason’s gentle and joyful methods are compatible with an LDS classical education. It is quite simple to adapt her model of classics, narration, brief lessons, and so on, to our context. When we study Charlotte Mason precepts, we are filled with a sense of beauty and hope. Necessarily, we somewhat modify her ways to the 21st century LDS child living in a large or not-so-large family. We read and discuss classics, experiment and draw conclusions, memorize scripture and poetry, spend hours outdoors, draw what we see, learn home arts, and much more–not as individual islands but as a cohesive family team as much as possible. Appropriately, we learn to work together and serve each other. As LDS homeschoolers, we have an awesome and wonderful opportunity to prepare future missionaries and citizens to make a real difference in building God’s kingdom and the world.
