“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” (Col. 2:6-8)
When their first child entered what was probably one of the finest private schools on the planet, Misty and Derek Foxley looked to the future of their children’s education with utmost confidence. But as that experience began to unfold its realities, the Foxleys (being idealists) soon discovered that even a first-class private school is not capable of providing a custom-fit education in terms of the learning environment, educational methods, and content best for each child. The adjustments their child and family had to make to fit the school model were unhealthy, both short- and long-term.
That’s when a critical conversation between them began, full of questions such as: “What is the meaning and purpose of education for His covenant people?” “How can education be sincerely rooted in Jesus Christ and in eternal truths?” “What might education be like in a future Zion, and how much of that ideal can we provide for our children in today’s world culture?” “Will we be creating for our posterity disadvantages if they are educated in non-traditional ways? Or will we be actually giving them great spiritual advantage?” Over thirty years of discussions on these topics will be distilled into one hour, from which you’ll walk away with a new perspective on education.
