Chris Jones

Christopher Jones (alias Mr. C) has, for the last decade, taught classes on history, civics, speech, and logic, both on- and offline as part of the growing private/homeschool movement. He is currently on the faculty of three schools across the Intermountain West—Liahona Preparatory Academy, Education Underground, and Mount Liberty College—teaching everything from World Civilizations to Defense Against the Dark Arts. Mr. C graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in Classics (Roman History). Since nobody wants to hire classicists, he then worked in practically every industry there is before settling down to a career hanging out with teenagers. A prolific writer, Mr. C has published twelve books (fiction and non-), three of them in the very popular Trinity Flynn crime series.

What Matters Most (Chris Jones)

The universe presents us with an infinite number of things to care about. From our children to our nation to our planet, there is no shortage of things to learn, to discuss, and to worry about. We can--easily--expend all our energy worrying about things that have very little actual importance, or over which we have little control. This can leave us spent just at the moment when our work could have maximum impact--if we had the resources to make a contribution. There is good news. We can know which things are worth our time and energy and which are not. But what is it that can grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference? Let's find that out together.

11:00 am - 11:50 am

Critical Learning in Time of War (Chris Jones)

In times of crisis (and this surely is one) it can be tempting to believe that the practical things are those that really matter. Producing food, building companies, winning elections—these things seem critical. Studying poetry, literature, and even history become things we wish we had time for. This could not be more dangerous. It is in times like these today that learning for its own sake becomes absolutely necessary; and the commitment to study is more important than ever.

Mr. C's History Hijack (Chris Jones)

Defense Against the Dark Arts (Chris Jones)

Forget boggarts and dementors. There are far more dangerous things cruising the modern world, and no silly wand-waving is going to back them off, either. Come learn from a Professor of Defense how to detect, deter, and defend against monsters every bit as real as you are—and gunning for you every day. You're probably reading this and thinking it's a joke. It isn't.
