Done is Better Than Perfect: Counseling in Our Homes

Lindy Van Komen loves people and learning about the world. She is a doula and childbirth mentor (complete with a perfectly lovely “zen” voice). Her love for supporting families began with her stumbling over things that worked with her handsome husband and fiesty children. A year and a half ago, Lindy’s family traded their nice, easy-going life in the suburbs (as if homeschooling five kids could ever really be easy going!), for the wild life of homesteading. She has learned more about ducks and chickens than she ever wanted to know. She has even learned to love cats and to live without air-conditioning, which she previously thought was impossible.

Jeff Van Komen loves being part of his children’s education and does so by mentoring them in classes with their homeschool community. His own path of education included a biochemisty and cell biology Ph.D., and he works as a microbiologist. When not working or helping with homeschooling, Jeff can be found indulging in his love for construction by upgrading, fixing, and running the homestead.

Family counsels can be the thing of nightmares. They can also be a catalyst for continual family growth. As we counsel together effectively, members of the family feel seen, heard, and noticed. This helps our communications, as well as developing an overall tone of love and understanding in our homes. Effective family councils have the power to strengthen the foundation for an educational, spiritual, emotional, and physical growth environment. The Van Komens will share tools, tricks, and tips that have helped them as they have instituted various types of councils in their home.
