Life constantly moves from order to chaos to order again, balance to imbalance, and back to balance, moderation to indulgence to moderation. What are we learning in the process? How to Teach my Teen to Study (Nicole Freeman)

Homeschooled students often learn while on the move, during family adventures, in group activities, or with friends in co-ops. Knowledge is acquired organically with fascinating tidbits recited ad nauseam during learning experiences. But there comes a time when studying becomes necessary. Advanced studies, community college, robust online courses, and college entrance exams will all require studying skills to be adequately prepared. Study skills are not subject-specific but can be used universally. What works, and how do I teach my child to study? Lighting, highlighters, white noise, or silence are all part of the studying environment. Do they need notecards and how do they learn to take notes? These important skills will be used forever.

Nicole Freeman

Family Education Lessons with Aristotle (Ian Cox)

This is a fun one! We talk about the classics a lot, read alouds, and great reads for youth, but sometimes we forget to read great depth and mission classics for ourselves. This workshop is an introduction to learning the language of the greats! As we seek to broaden and deepen our thinking, our ability to serve others increases. Sometimes all we need to turn things up a notch is a little help over that first hurdle, or a little extra insight from a mentor, or simply a group of like-minded friends to bounce ideas around with. This is what studying Aristotle has done for me and I know you’ll have a similar experience.

Cast Vision More Than Course Correct (Nephi Zufelt)

Learning is hard work, that's what makes it worthwhile. Unfortunately, it is also what makes it hard. However, there are those golden moments when the hard work of learning becomes easy because it lines up with one of our passions, a goal we have, or one of our innate gifts. In this class, we will discuss how we can spend less time correcting our children and getting them back on task and more time on helping them connect with their own internal inspiration.

"Teaching” the Junior High & High School Sciences at Home (Jay Wile)

In this seminar, Dr. Jay L. Wile explains how any parent can help his or her children learn science at the upper levels. As a former University teacher and a former high school teacher, Dr. Wile is a staunch advocate of homeschooling a student throughout high school. He agrees that most parents do not have the ability to teach the high school sciences at home, but he also contends that this is not a problem. By the time a homeschooled student reaches high school, he or she should have the ability to learn independently or with the help of another. Thus, Dr. Wile admonishes the parent to learn the subject right along with the student. With both the parent and the student helping each other learn, an upper-level science experience can be equally rewarding for both! In order to help the homeschooling parent plan his or her science curriculum, Dr. Wile provides study timelines for both the science-oriented and the non-science-oriented student. In addition, he discusses the mathematical skills needed in order to maintain the proposed timeline.
